Evaluating Invasive Marbled Crayfish as a Potential Livestock for Sustainable Aquaculture

چکیده

The marbled crayfish ( Procambarus virginalis ) is a recently discovered freshwater species, which reproduces by apomictic parthenogenesis, resulting in monoclonal, and all-female population. animals were widely distributed through the aquarium trade have established numerous stable wild populations anthropogenic releases. They are highly prevalent Madagascar, where they become popular source of nutritional protein. As aquaculture open systems thriving, but ecologically damaging global industry, alternatives urgently needed. Although often branded their invasive mode reproduction, overall invasiveness not higher than for other cultured species. Furthermore, resiliency high adaptability provide strong rationale evaluating them closed, environmentally safe approaches. Here we describe novel population former German coal mining area that characterized acid polluted water. Even under these adverse conditions, grew to sizes, weights comparable commercially farmed crayfish. Tailored feed development laboratory testing demonstrated efficient conversion, suggesting considerable capacity sustainable production closed systems. We further show meat can be readily introduced into European meals. Finally, chemical analysis exoskeletons revealed comparably amounts chitin, valuable synthesis chitosan bioplastics. Our results thus suggest may represent alternative aquaculture.

The circadian biology of the marbled crayfish.

The parthenogenetic marbled crayfish (Procambarus spec.) has recently been introduced as a new preparation for neuroethological studies. Since isogeneity apparently limits inter-individual variation, this otherwise typical decapod species may be especially valuable for circadian studies. Locomotor activity of isolated marbled crayfish and agonistic activity of small social groups maintain circa...

The marbled crayfish as a paradigm for saltational speciation by autopolyploidy and parthenogenesis in animals

The parthenogenetic all-female marbled crayfish is a novel research model and potent invader of freshwater ecosystems. It is a triploid descendant of the sexually reproducing slough crayfish, Procambarus fallax, but its taxonomic status has remained unsettled. By cross-breeding experiments and parentage analysis we show here that marbled crayfish and P. fallax are reproductively separated. Both...

Livestock as a potential biological control agent for an invasive wetland plant

Invasive species threaten biodiversity and incur costs exceeding billions of US$. Eradication efforts, however, are nearly always unsuccessful. Throughout much of North America, land managers have used expensive, and ultimately ineffective, techniques to combat invasive Phragmites australis in marshes. Here, we reveal that Phragmites may potentially be controlled by employing an affordable meas...
